Long before anyone had heard of the Internet, early home computer users could read their morning newspapers online … sort of. Steve Newman’s 1981 story was broadcast on KRON San Francisco.
I own a printing firm, and at that time we were still composing pages using metal types and airbrush processes. Tideous and expensive…can’t believe how far we have come.
Fair enough. The whole title of this video should have been “Beginning of the end of print journalism” but my first impression of my report as I uploaded it was that it was the beginning of personal online computing … hence the Internet.
Actually, this is not primitive Internet, it is COMPU$ERVE. CI$ offered a gateway to the Internet via CIM (Compuserve Information Manager) which was crummy in the extreme. To call CI$ a primitive Internet is like calling a telegraph a primitive television.
The proto-form of the internet was actually created by the U.S.A. military, during the 1960s.
I believe it was created by D.A.R.P.A. or N.O.R.A.D.

Seriously??? Richard Halloran OWNS a home computer??!!!!!
“Of the estimated 2,000-3,000 computer users in the Bay Area…”. Wow, that is just an amazing number compared to what it is today just 30 years later.
Back then, probobly no one thought we would ever read our newspapers on our phones.
So back in 1981 the nerds who used new applications and helped by that developing the internet were really old people.
“Discover cars”
LOL!
